You have been living in Saudi Arabia for ten years because of
personal reasons. You receive this email from a friend who wants to travel
there and ask for some information before making up her mind.
Hi Sarah,
How's it
going? I hope you are doing well.
I
appreciate you are quite busy and I don't want you to waste your time, but I
need some help.
I've been
offered a post in Saudi Arabia to work in a subsidiary company and I don't know
what to do.
Economic
conditions are really superb and it offers excellent promotion prospects.
As you know this country so well, I thought you'd be the one to give me
some good advice.
Why don't
you inform me about Saudi Arabia in relation to social issues, laws, education
(I would take my family with me) and, above all, women's role there?
What will
happen in future? Is the situation for women starting to change?
Please,
give me some hints before I make up my mind.
Jane
Answer her email in 125-150 words.
Hi Jane,
I hope you're fine. Being able to help you is always a
pleasure for me.
Here, the king rules and the constitution depends on
Islamic law. Citizens have very few rights. They have a remarkable educational
system with more than fifty universities.
The niqab is not mandatory, but it is a rule of thumb.
Women are subordinate to the guardian (wali) and have very few rights. The LGBT
community suffers repression.
In recent times, Saudi Arabia has undergone some changes. One of them is the
women's driving license.
You will need a valid visa. Female travelers must have
a sponsor. Be respectful of the local culture. Public displays of affection are
frowned upon, as is drinking alcohol. It is forbidden to take pictures of the
local population without permission, as well as the religious articles of
non-Islamic religions.
I hope this information will be useful.
Best wishes
Sarah
