Present perfect or past simple

Past simple
Present perfect
is used when the time period HAS finished:
I saw three films last week.
(Last week is finished.)
is used when the time period has NOT finished:
I have seen three films this week.
(This week has not finished yet.)
is used when giving older information:
Martin crashed his car last year.
(This is old information.)
is often used when giving recent news:
Martin has crashed his car again.
(This is new information.)
the time is clear:
I saw that film on Thursday.
(We know exactly when.)
is used when the time is not specific:
I have already seen that film.
(We don't know when.)

Been and gone
Compare the present perfect of be and go.
Mike has been to Paris. He went to Paris and came back
Mike has gone to Paris. He’s in Paris now.
